MBA Episode 41: The Role of Apologetics in Spiritual Warfare (featuring Simon Brace) – Part 3

Today, we’re continuing with Part 3 of Simon Brace’s talk on Spiritual Warfare. In this last part of his talk, he covers the importance of apologetics and critical thinking in the education of pastors and laymen.

Main Points Covered:

  • A brief overview of what went on during the second episode of this series:
    • Elders need to be able to refute bad doctrine.
    • The importance of critical thinking in education, including syllogisms, premise, conclusions, etc.
    • Amy’s situation with teaching in an apologetics class. The students struggled with how to present truth in an evangelistic way.
    • Having different truths is incompatible.

  • Simon Brace talks about the importance of critical thinking and apologetics in the education of our pastors and laymen, especially today when there are abortion clinics and lost sheep everywhere. We’re so focused on the soul that we forget that the mind comes with it.
  • Simon Brace reads the inauguration speech at the opening of the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College.
  • When Amy was taking part in seminary, a critical thinking/logic class was required to graduate. In those classes, the most push-back came from the elders who thought that they didn’t need to be able to refute arguments. But it’s not just about attendance and ministering, it is also about discipling folks to be able to perceive the spiritual warfare that is out there and demolish those strongholds.
  • Simon Brace closes with:
    • a quote from C.S. Lewis, “To be ignorant and simple now–not to be able to meet the enemies on their own ground–would be to throw down our weapons, and to betray our uneducated brethren who have, under God, no defense but us against the intellectual attacks of the heathen. Good philosophy must exist, if for no other reason, because bad philosophy needs to be answered.”
    • “There’s no glory in being an idiot for Jesus,” – Simon Brace.
    • Romans 12: 2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

  • The Mama Bear Podcast was started after seeing the slaughter. We can equip and train our children, but remember that your goal is to make your kids capable and accountable. We can do that by teaching our kids to discern the truth.
  • We aren’t called to be the perfect parents, we only need to do what we are capable of doing. We need to protect and educate the next generation (and ourselves).

The Takeaways:

  • Elders need to be able to refute bad doctrine.
  • We can equip and train our children, but remember that your goal is to make your kids capable and accountable. We can do that by teaching our kids to discern the truth.
